The end of the year is associated with heat, but most of the time it’s also rainy. As soon as the rainy season starts, it’s always difficult to keep the house clean because of the mud and humidity. Especially as it’s impossible to stay at home all the time: the children have to get to school, while the adults have to get to work. As a result, they all carry mud inside and dirt the house on the way back.
However, a dirty house in wet weather is not inevitable. There are always ways to keep your home as clean as possible, even when it’s muddy outside.
Rule n°1: shoes stay at the entrance
You can’t walk outside without wearing rain boots or shoes that protect against mud. However, the best way to prevent them from carrying mud inside the house is to leave them at the entrance. It’s just common sense.
For better hygiene, you can even rinse the shoes in clean water before leaving them at the entrance. If this isn’t possible, at least rinse the soles, then wipe them on an absorbent mat. This will avoid contaminating the floor with dirt and leaving water marks on the tiles.
In fact, you can get used to washing your home’s floor with a disinfectant floor and surface cleaner, which kills bacteria as well as removing dirt. The ideal solution for a healthy, clean floor every day!
Rule 2: use a dirt-repellent mat
You need to protect your entrance with a mat, but not just any mat. To be effective, it’s important to opt for a dirt-repellent mat that retains the maximum amount of dirt carried by shoes and feet.
Most of the time, these mats are made of plastic or have thick bristles that act as scrapers.
Similarly, avoid terrycloth mats, as they soak up water easily, making the soles dirtier than they already are and requiring frequent washing.
Rule no. 3: Fixing up the entrance
The best way to keep the maximum amount of dirt outside, or at least at the entrance, is to fix it up properly. As soon as it starts raining, create a space for wet clothes and other objects at the entrance to the house.
To do this, install pegs on the walls so that everyone can easily hang up wet clothes and bags. Put a mop underneath to wipe the floor after hanging things up. This will prevent the entrance from being slippery from water dripping from wet objects.
Also place an umbrella stand and a mat to wipe feet and shoes. Shoes can be stored on a suitable rack until the rain stops and they can be left to dry in the sun. If you’re short of space for this type of storage, you can wrap shoes individually in plastic bags to prevent them piling up at the entrance.
Note that a plastic bucket works perfectly as an umbrella stand. If you’re on a budget, there’s no need to spend a fortune on it!
Fixing up the entrance is a particularly effective way of keeping the rest of the house free from mud and dirt. All you have to do is clean the area regularly with suitable products. You’ll always have less cleaning to do in the rest of the house.
Rule 4: Wear rain gear outdoors
To avoid soiling the house after an outing in the rain, it’s highly advisable to wear weather-appropriate clothing. A raincoat with matching pants, rain boots and an umbrella will prevent you from soiling your clothes and the house, as they are waterproof and dry faster.
Rule 5: invest in a floor polish
Despite all the precautions we can take, it can sometimes be difficult to keep dirt and mud at the entrance. This can happen, for example, during cyclones or when rainfall is particularly heavy. The best thing to do is to invest in a polish that protects the floor from humidity, so you don’t have to use floor cleaner too often. When cleaning with this type of product, simply rinse the mop with clean water and run it over the floor again to restore its shine and lustre.
