It’s not always easy to keep floors clean, especially in high-traffic areas such as the homes of large families, but especially in establishments open to the public, such as restaurants, administrative offices, shops, etc.
And yet, it’s a pressing need to keep your premises clean to ensure the hygiene and comfort of users and visitors. To do this, you can opt for the wet sweeping technique, a method that allows you to dust and clean the floor in a single gesture.
Why opt for wet sweeping? What products should I use? How do I go about it?
Find out all you need to know about wet sweeping in the rest of this article.
Why use wet sweeping to clean floors?
Wet sweeping is a cleaning technique that consists of dusting and scrubbing the floor in a single movement. It replaces dry sweeping and dusting with a broom and duster, and is particularly recommended in professional environments with demanding hygiene standards.
There are many advantages to wet sweeping:
- It is suitable for areas that require a rigorously clean and healthy environment, such as: business premises, medical practices, restaurant kitchens, etc.
- Wet sweeping saves time by combining 2 gestures in one.
- This technique requires only hygiene products, unlike dusting and vacuuming, which require the use of a vacuum cleaner. Note that for effective wet sweeping, it’s best to use suitable products. SOMAPRO offers a full range of Impec floor care products to ensure effective hygiene of all types of flooring: wooden floors, cement, tiles, etc.
- Wet sweeping is silent, making it ideal for hospitals and other places where noise may disturb employees or customers.
- It requires little effort, which optimizes the productivity of surface technicians.
- Wet sweeping is more effective than dry sweeping for removing dust from smooth floors. It also has the added advantage of limiting airborne dust to just 10%. Thanks to this technique, you limit the risk of contamination by pathogenic germs that dust can carry.
Equipment required for wet sweeping
To adopt the wet sweeping technique, you need the right equipment. Equipment depends on whether you plan to use the technique at work or at home.
- For professional use, a trapeze broom with moist gauze and paraffin oil on the head is required. For single use, this accessory ensures better cleaning and dusting. The broom handle should be telescopic to facilitate cleaning in hard-to-reach areas, while the sole plate should be made of striped rubber, which is more sustainable over time.
- For the home, or if you can’t find soaked gauze in the shops, you can use a broom fitted with flat microfiber mops. This equipment is easier to find and reusable. It’s therefore more environmentally-friendly and suitable for both domestic and professional use.
How to wet sweep?
In practice, wet sweeping combines several techniques from which you can choose depending on the surface to be cleaned.
The most popular wet sweeping techniques are:
- The push broom method, which consists of sliding the broom in front of you, tracing parallel strips on the ground.
- The sculling method, which consists of zigzagging while pulling the broom towards you during cleaning.
Whatever method you choose, it is always necessary to start with a routing, which consists of going around the room following the walls, then zigzagging from the back wall to the exit, if you are cleaning a small area.
For large rooms, it’s best to do a routing, then go to the bottom of the part so that parallel strips overlap.
Finally, it’s also advisable to always start cleaning in hard-to-reach areas to get rid of the dust (under furniture, in corners, along walls…). Then progress towards the exit, avoiding as far as possible going back over areas already cleaned, so as not to soil the surfaces again.
