The layout of the bedroom is an essential element in getting a good night’s sleep and feeling more relaxed. The key to a healthy lifestyle includes!
However, there’s no need to break the bank or call in an interior designer. All you need is a few tips and a little imagination.
Make room for soft colors
To create a bedroom with a soothing, relaxing atmosphere, the first thing to think about is color. Bright colors such as orange, purple or red should be avoided, as they are not conducive to relaxation and calm at bedtime. In fact, there’s a reason why relaxation areas such as massage parlors or spas have white or very light-coloured walls: these colors help to soothe the eyes and relax. You can add small touches of pastel or light green.
However, painting the walls white isn’t enough to create a zen atmosphere: you can add a few mineral paints to brighten things up without going overboard. If you’re not a fan of bright walls, it’s not totally impossible to go for a darker shade to create a soothing ambience. Navy blue, for example, can be used to create a serene bedroom.
Tidiness is the watchword
If you’re looking for a zen decor, clutter is a no-no in your bedroom. You need to take the time to sort through your belongings and get rid of all the clutter: clothes you don’t wear any more, old magazines, useless knick-knacks, etc. Everything you don’t use needs to go: you need to make a clean sweep. It’s also a good idea to find some clever storage space for your belongings. Built-in wardrobes and drawer beds are your best allies. Your choice should be based on your well-being: you should opt for objects that help you feel relaxed and at peace in your personal space. Of course, you mustn’t clutter up your home with too much furniture, knick-knacks or decorative objects: it’s better to be frugal.

Fresh air
Ventilation is the key to a bedroom that invites calm and rest. This makes sense, since the quality of the air we breathe has a direct influence on our general state of health. Resting in a room with particularly pure air is good for both body and mind.
If you’re a fan, there’s nothing to stop you from spraying room spray in your bedroom for a touch of freshness.
Zen bedroom lighting
In Feng-Shui, light is very important. Lighting must not be left to chance: natural light must flow into the room, and to achieve this, there must be as many openings as possible. This has the added bonus of airing out the room and allowing air to circulate, for a healthier atmosphere. Dust mites and dust will no longer accumulate on your bed, and this will have an impact on the quality of your sleep.
When it comes to lighting, you need to avoid spotlights and bulbs that are too bright, which will dazzle you and tire your eyes. Today, there are lighting fixtures that can provide sufficient light without being too bright. Models with rice paper, which have a light, airy design, are particularly compatible with a zen atmosphere. Candles can also help create a subdued atmosphere, ideal for relaxing and falling asleep gently.
Opt for natural materials
Although knick-knacks and other decorative objects should not be too numerous or too cumbersome in a zen bedroom, they should be chosen very carefully so as not to detract from the overall atmosphere of the room. In Feng-Shui, natural materials have pride of place: stone, wood, plant elements… are all welcome to bring a touch of authenticity to your room. The same applies to linens, especially sheets and pillowcases, which should be made from cotton, wool or linen. They’re better for your skin and help you get a good night’s sleep.
